"One of the most thoughtful works in the show, Ed Fornieles’s Fini Season One: Adventures in Symbiotic Love Tyranny (2023), is populated by a race of appealing animated characters called Fini, which have recently proliferated online as NFTs. ‘Cute’ has risen to become the default aesthetic of digital culture, its DNA entwined with AI. At various points, Fornieles’s alter egos – including his longhaired chihuahua Yuri – confess to the addictive quality of this appealing world online. How can real life ever match up? The film opens with a short lecture delivered by a blobby animated character who alerts us to the double bluff at the heart of cute. Cute’s power comes from its promise of powerlessness – its appeal for our care and attention is in fact highly manipulative." - iNEWS
